I have this crazy idea that what we do during this short life can actually make a difference. In fact, even more crazy is that I believe that a single person sold out to a worthy cause can change the world. I know this is cliché, but I really believe this. The problem is that I encounter so many people who do not believe this. I mean actually believe this to the point of taking action, to the point of making changes in your life, to the point of stepping out in faith and doing something good that other people around you aren't doing.
Many people don't even vote because their "vote doesn't matter." Others limp through a "half-life" void of meaning and purpose simply because they believe there is nothing more to life - that life is simply a time to be devoted to personal gratification, to get ahead of others, make as much money as possible, and if all goes well, save enough money to spend the last few moments on this planet playing golf, going fishing and watching The Price is Right on TV. What a horrible, sad, and absolutely wrong perspective on life. Wouldn't you agree?
Margaret Mead said that "Never believe that a few caring people can't change the world. For, indeed, that's all whoever have." I like that quote because it says that you can make a difference - but I want to suggest a slightly different perspective and that is this: there are many people who care, but only a few who actually do anything about it.
Jesus Christ said something along these lines in the book of Matthew: "The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few." Most would argue that Jesus is speaking to saving souls - I agree. But I also believe that the principle applies to life on earth in general. Why is there so much evil? Because good people do nothing. Why are there so many starving kids in the world? Because few do anything about it. Why are there kids right here in America without homes? Because only a few people have actually taken steps to help solve the problem. There is plenty of work to do, but the problem is no one in doing it.
So, what is a "SOLDOUT.LIFE"? Good question. As I launch this blog (SOLDOUT.LIFE), I really don't even know where it's going to go. A soldout.life is one dedicated to purpose, to serving others, and following Jesus. I believe that Jesus calls us to something greater, I believe he is calling us to something more than we are doing now; I believe that his desire is for us to do what he would be doing if he were still here. A SOLDOUT.LIFE is a life that seeks to do this; one that seeks to make a difference against all odds; one that lives counter-culturally and follows our convictions.
I can tell you this much - my hope that this becomes something much, much more. But in the meantime, I plan on sharing stories of heroic people living soldout.lives, stories from the bible, service opportunities and needs, and maybe we can grow together and do something meaningful.
You can change the world - do you believe that?
